November 2010

You are currently browsing the monthly archive for November 2010.

Usually my blog (as you may have noticed) is a pretty fluffy random mess of outfits and zombies and nice cakes and cute places. I don’t often get serious. I don’t ask the BIG questions, wax lyrical on the serious matters or make earth shatternig statements. But lately something huge has been bothering me (and maybe the world), it leaves me in a cold sweat at night, it gives me papatations whenever I hear about it. And that is…

TO KINDLE OR NOT TO KINDLE?

Kindles have been a creation banded around for a while now but with the launch of ibooks on iPhone and iPads and not really knowing anyone who jumped on the kindle band-wagon, I was starting to think of them as the mini-disk (aw) of the technology world.

Until this strange shift in the universe happened where suddenly every day I hear someone talk about them as the ultimate object of desire! Every Christmas wishlist I see uses the K word multiple times. Every magazine I open has them leaping out at me. When did this happen! When did kindle stop being something you use to fuel a fire? I feel like a dinosaur as all my nearest and dearest suddenly have a very “duh yeah kindles, everyone has/wants one” attitude whilst I clutch to my (big, smell, heavy) books and frown in the direction of something so clinical and well… the opposite of everything I love about books!

I am a huge bookworm. I have been ever since books were used as a treat (over sweets) when I was growing up and this has groomed me into much preferring to tuck into a good novel than a Wispa. I love absolutely everything about books, and by that I mean physical book object. The smell! The clean, crisp paper/ink smell of a new hardback Vs the old, musty, plastic smell of an old library reject. I love the text and the comfort of holding a book close and the change in weight as you move the bulk of pages from left to right as you wade through each chapter.

Don’t get me wrong, as someone attending PHYSIO partly because I have really irritated my back by carrying around a mini-lending-library for most of my life, I can see the perks of the kindle. The ease of having so much in such a small, light place. I too am dazzled by the technology and the almost sci-fi-real-future-stuff that you could condense an entire lifes collection of novels into one tiny device. As I said recently, the pure bulk and weight of one book has left me only able to read it at home. Ahhhh the kindle sneers at me, not a problem with me!  I also never thought I would be comfortable replacing CDs with an iPod but look at me now – selling my lifes CD collection on music magpie to pay for Christmas presents!

But, I think there is something different with books to CDs. I haven’t got emotionally attached to the CD case you know? Or the sleeve! Just the musical content which is identical if you play it on mp3. But with books, each of my collection has absorbed memories and I can pinpoint the exact location or time and year I read it. Sand in the spine, chocolate fingerprints, phone numbers scrawled on pages, inscriptions for birthdays and Christmas…

Until a kindle can offer me this (don’t think chocolate finger prints and technology work really; probably why my laptop went to PC heaven!) I think I’ll stick to my bulky, pain inducing real books thanks.

Please tell me your views. Top of your wishlist? Why? Perhaps I’m alone in my world of resistance!

When I received an invite to attend the premier of House Party of the Dead 6, I wondered what the evening would consist of. A quick clatter of keys into google and the words zombie movie, zombie burlesque, zombie make up and zombie rock bands jumped out at me and it was an easy sell. Armed with my (very wholesome, non gorey) friend Ross we stomped through the frosty streets of Camden to the Purple Turtle not too sure what lay aheady. I did however wear my Braaains! necklace in preperation.

Purple Turtle is one of those loveable sticky floored, grungey, dark venues; and probably the only place in London you can buy a round for under a fiver! Upon arrival I couldn’t see many of the undead amongst us. I then turned round from my waiting spot at the bar to come face to face with this…

The top floor of the venue was dedicated to a very talented make-up team, armed with the skills to give all attendees gaping neck wounds, bleeding eyes and oozing bites. All the best zombie traits! There was some brilliant music, a hot zombified burlesque dancer and then of course, the highlight… the movie.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film from start to finish. It ticked EVERY box of a classic B movie zombie stunner – grizzly gore, guts, frights, hot girls in their underwear and amongst the horror, ALOT of laughs. All jampacked into 15 minutes, which is not easily done. The characters were well scripted and well executed; all the acting was fantastic and the studenty house gave a unique and original base for the reaction to a zombie apocolypse. I was left wanting more, which is always a good thing. The production value looked up there with any famous Zombie flick (if not glossier actually!) and I have to applaud Andy and all the cast/crew involved. What a treat! It got my non-zombie heart a flutter! You can check the Teaser Trailer Here!

To give you some background on the film and how it even came to exist, I interviewed the charming braaaains (geddit!) behind the project, Andy Edwards.

Tell me a bit about you please Andy…
I’m not particularly interesting really. I’m a filmmaker from Birmingham, who’s now living in London and attempting to make it in the world of films. Until recently I was making films as more of a hobby around my day job – but I was made redundant from my day job a year or so ago so now I’m trying to use the fact I have much more free time on my hands to good use and really go for it. Obviously it also means I don’t have any money, but the role of impoverished, struggling filmmaker kind of suits me.

What is the history of the movie?
Houseparty of the Dead started off 3 years ago, with a short film shot in my flat in Kentish Town. It featured a bunch of my mates, was shot in an afternoon, and the zombies were made up with red paint, glue and cornflakes by my mate Rob Leese-Jones, who has since gone on to be co-producer on most of the shorts, and even directed part 4. It was only intended to be a one-off, but everyone enjoyed it so much that a sequel was pretty much demanded, and its grown from there. With each one I’ve tried to up the production values, and with part 6 we had professional actors & make-up, and over 50 zombie extras.

How did you cast HPOTD6?
Glad you appreciated the acting, as that was one of the things I was making a conscious effort to improve for this one. Until part 6, all of the actors had been friends or friends of friends. Some of whom were actors, or had some experience, but the majority weren’t. Everybody who’s been in one of my films has done an amazing job, but for this one I wanted to try and work with all professional actors. A few of the actors I knew, but most were recruited through a casting website, and we borrowed the basement of a pub for 2 days and did auditions. We had such a good response that we even had to do call-back auditions for the lead female roles to decide between some very talented actresses. It’s when you’re asking two attractive actresses to practice a kissing scene in an audition that you know you’ve picked the right career! As the roles were unpaid we had a few last minute changes of actors, but I couldn’t be happier with the cast that we got, and the decision to cast professionals really paid off.

As for extras – we’ve never had a shortage of willing volunteers to be zombified and create a zombie army – helped by the fact that we actively encourage them to get drunk during the shoot. This not only keeps them happy during what could be a long period of waiting around, but also aids their performances as zombies

What’s next for the movie?
There’s a few tweaks that need to be made, and then the movie will be available online, and also sent out to as many film festivals as will show it. We were also filmed during the making of the film, by a TV crew from Sky One for a reality TV show which should be airing some time in the new year. Who knows what they’ll make of us in the edit, but it should get us plenty of publicity at least! As for the Houseparty of the Dead as a “franchise”, the next step is a feature film. I’m currently writing the script, and we’re looking for funding.

What’s your alltime favourite zombie movie, other than HOTD6 ;]?
I’m a big fan of the 2 recent British movies, which of course revived the zombie genre in very different ways, 28 Days Later and Shaun of the Dead. But for all-time favourites, it’s between Romero’s Dawn of the Dead or Zombie Flesh Eaters – mainly because a zombie fights a shark. And its a real shark.

Talk to me about your decision to make your zombies fast moving modern ones, over slow dumb lurchy Romero ones!
I’ve actually got both kinds in Houseparty of the Dead. Up until part 5, they were all the slow kind, but from part 5 onwards I’ve started introducing a few fast ones into the mix. Partly its for dramatic reasons – if you have a large number then its best to have them all slow, but singular zombies are scarier if they’re quicker. Also, to try and introduce some kind of logic to the zombie transformation process. In most zombie films, the time from bite to full infection is entirely arbitrary – it’s whatever has the most dramatic impact, whether that be an instant transformation or a slow 3 day process. In the HPOTD world, slow zombie bites infect you slowly, fast zombie bites can be much quicker.
Also, the two “breeds” hate each other – the final war will not be fought between humans and zombies, but fast zombies and slow zombies….

Thanks Andy for taking the time to answer my questions and all I can say is that I wish I was secretly sitting on wads of cash that I could hand over to help with the feature film, as I fully believe in the premise and production. Britain used to be a key player in the world of zombie movies in the wake of Plague Of The Zombies and we’ve seen a frutratingly slow return to this state in the last decade, but I think HPOTD could be just to ticket for a 2010′s zombie cinema invasion! Good luck guys!

It’s been over 6 months since I last went to see my grandparents but it feels like I just blinked and the time vanished. Since I last saw them I’ve bought a flat, flown half way around the world and back, spent hours exploring London sites and secrets and become a qualified first aider. So it was high time I crept onto the train that takes me to their countryside hideaway. Getting an East Coast train from Liverpool Street is a really good way of getting a sneaky view into the 2012 Olympic build. The train slows to a crawl as it passes through Stratford and you get long, open views of the stadium, the new train station and most impressively; the bare bones of what will be the Aquatics Centre. The thousands of seats towering over the empty ground look so strange and isolated at the moment but it’s easy to colour in the crowds and water and chaos with your imagination.

The surrounding of my grandparents house look so different compared to the last time I visited, when everything was sprouting green with Spring luciousness! I love visiting any time of year though, and even though the trees were mostly bare or bowing with rotten fruit, and the air was freezing cold and the ground was muddy, it still felt a million miles from work and tubes and crowds and Oxford Street Christmas shoppers which was what I needed for my tired brain!

My gran looked quite tired this visit, although at 91 she is certainly entitled to look a little weary. However she still chatted non stop and told me a few stories I had never heard before, as well as teaching me how to make brussel sprout soup (don’t make that face, it has to be tried to be believed, it has a really tasty smokey flavour and is delicious!) (and no, I don’t like brussel sprouts with my Christmas dinner either!) and when my aunt, uncle and cousins pitched up for a game of our family invented card game Racing Demon (it’s rawcous, rowdy and involves lots of shouting and distraction techniques) she still beat us all. Twice. My Pa was in good spirits and less confused this visit, although he has started talking about death more. On Saturday morning he looked distracted and I thought he’s misplaced something so I asked him are you looking for something Pa? And he said yes, to die. d. i. e. (nice of him to spell it out for me!) I sound like I’m making light of it, when obviously it’s not nice to hear your grandfather speak that way, but it’s the sullen attitude he does it with and then the fact that in the next breath he is right as rain again and talking about his old car or his favourite holiday to Ireland or asking for Yorkshire Pudding with golden syrup for his pudding. I think it’s probably quite normal for elderly people to talk about dying so that they feel more in control and accustomed to the idea? Either way I’ve told him he is absolutely not to go anywhere, and then I distracted him with the iPad which I think completely blew his mind and he enjoyed playing and typing on it and looking at photos of his feline great grandaughter for a good 30 minutes.

I felt extra sad to leave them this time, because next Easter seems like forever away to go visit again. As soon as I go I miss my Pa’s papery skin on his hands, and my grans smells and her perfectly set white hair and just how insanely happy sitting with them for hours on end just chatting and questioning and reading and eating makes me.

I LOVE Christmas dinner. Everything about it is dreamy, and it is definitely one of the things I look forward to the most; way above presents and potential snow storms. So, Christmas dinner is great. But Christmas dinner COLD and inbetween slices of bread? FAR superior!

Every year  it is with baited breath that I await November, and the launch of Christmas Sandwiches in the shops. Pret A Manger practically have a restraining order against me for how many times I have asked when is Christmas Sandwich day?? on their Facebook fan page.

Off the back of a few people saying they enjoyed my Halloween snacks blog, I thought I would sample the top 3 Christmas sandwich offerings and report back. Any excuse to eat a turkey dinner sandwich every day this week for lunch under the guise of research!

1. Marks & Spencer Turkey Feast Sandwich

This is a heady line up of turkey, cure dried bacon, stuffing and cranberry. Oh and some random onion mayonnaise for good measure. It’s a pretty meat-tastic sandwich and the dryness of the turkey overtakes the more subtle festive flavours. Also the stuffing is minimal… and personally I think that is the best bit so being stingy isn’t very acceptable! On the whole it fills a hole and definitely beats boring ol’ ham and cheese but isn’t the king of Christmas sandwiches.

However, there is a very exciting selection of other Christmas treats from their Food on the Move range that have caught my eye; including Roast Gammon Crisps, Beechwood Smoked Gammon & Cornish Cruncher sandwich, Aberdeen Angus Rare Roast Beef & Ale Chutney sandwich, Christmas Cheesecake and Mulled Plum, Grape and Pear Juice (YUM!!!!) so you can expect a follow up of other Christmas goods – but I might hang on until we are actually in December. Although you don’t have to feel guilty about getting into the Christmas mood early as the best thing about the Festive range is that for every product sold; M&S will donate 5% to housing charity Shelter.

2. Eat Turkey & Cranberry Sandwich

This is the healthy option for festive foodies! There are only 369 calories per sandwich (compared to 500+ in the other two, mostly due to their lashings of mayo) and less than 5% fat. A lovely combo of turkey, cranberry and GREENS! Yes, rockety-water-cressy green stuff. This is the healthiest on offer so good for days when you fancy a big packet of crisps and mince pie on the side.

3.Pret A Manger Christmas Lunch Sandwich

It’s the original… and THE BEST! Those lovelies at Pret definitely know what they are doing and this sandwich is honestly some sort of genius. A perfectly stacked line up of turkey, sage & onion stuffing, proper cranberry & port sauce AND my favourite bit – little crackly pieces of fried onion create a taste sensation. Again, the company have a fantastic process where they donate 5p from every sandwich sold to help provide hot meals to the homeless across the UK at various charities.

So there we go, if you are a Christmas sandwich novice, I would highly recommend you start at Pret and report back. If you are a herbivore… there are tons of great products out there for you at all the chains I’ve mentioned too such as brie & grape baguettes and brie & cranberry chutney  sandwiches.

The one thing missing from all the contenders is…. a nice slab of Yorkshire pudding in there!

Maybe next year ey.

This months spotlight is on a truley terrific gal from Northern Ireland – Claire aka French For Cupcake. Claires blog basically consists of all my favourite things – LOTS of baking, lots of recipes and lots of pretty dresses. Now when I say that Claire can bake, I mean she can really bake.  She could easily live off her skills in the kitchen department, as the magical things she conjours up are out of this world and oh so professional. I wish I lived close enough to pop round for a cup of tea and baked good!

It’s my absolutely pleasure to be able to feature this very talented lady and I advise you to instantly add her to your reader; she never fails to put a smile on my face by immersing me in her magical world.

1. When did you start your blog & why? I started my blog in January 2009. I have kept a livejournal since I was 14 but I liked to keep that quite private so I wanted to find a more public platform for sharing my photos and a blog seemed to be the best way.

2. What inspired you in terms of content/theme/appearence? I have always loved documenting things, probably mostly boring everyday things that nobody would be interested in really! I worried for a while that my blog had no unifying theme and tried to stick to either fashion or food but then I realised others were just posting what they wanted and loving it so I decided to do the same. The appearance of my blog is very simple although I am in the process of redesigning!

3. How would you describe your blog in three words? Oh gosh, that’s hard. Probably sweet, creative and eclectic.

4. What do you love (/if anything hate) about your blog? I love when I get comments and emails from other girls telling me I have inspired them to have self confidence and feel proud in their own skin. That’s a big thing for me. To learn that I have taught girls that they can be beautiful no matter what their size makes me feel really happy. I don’t really hate anything, one thing I dislike about blogger, at least compared to livejournal, is that it’s difficult to reply directly to comments and I don’t want readers to think I am ignoring them! If anyone can help me with this let me know!

 5. What makes you the most happy and most sad? I am a girl of simple pleasures, the things that make me happy are films, a good cup of tea and or a night of dancing with my friends. What makes me sad? When my expectations of people are let down, I hate that.

 6. Who is behind French For Cupcake? Well I’m Claire, a 22 year old Masters student from Belfast in Northern Ireland. I love films (obviously) particularly French New Wave, and my focus of research is on gender theory within films, representations of women etc. I’m a true feminist and my academic writing tends to reflect that. I love folk and alternative music, my parents were complete hippies and I have been given their record collection (lucky me!). I particularly love Tori Amos, Edith Piaf, Martha and Rufus Wainwright, Joni Mitchell, Simon and Garfunkel, Carole King and Laura Marling.

7. What is the best fact you know? Oh god, I don’t know what the best one is! I giggled when I read about penguin prostitutes.

8. Which others blogs do you feast on? I have hundreds of blogs added to my google reader, but these are some of my favorites:

Messy Carla
Ulrikah
WishWishWish
LLYMLRS
Elinkan

9. What is your all time favourite outfit? My taste is constantly changing, at the moment I’ll pick this one; because I love the shape of the dress and how it flatters my curves. I got it in  A-wear, I wish they would make the same dress in all colours!

10. What is your blogging soundtrack? Right now it is a mix of Robyn (I love her) and Alessi’s Ark. I like to listen to cheerful music when I blog!

11. What are your plans both fashion and otherwise to survive the predicted snowy winter? Lots of tea, hot water bottles, dvds, books, scarves, boots gloves and my trusty panda hat!
